How does being next to, on, or in the water make you feel?
It’s a question we find ourselves asking often here at Tailwind Jungle Lodge—because for more than twenty years, we’ve watched how people change when they arrive on the Mexican Pacific. Stress washes away. Shoulders drop. Smiles widen. Breath deepens. And the moment guests hear the sound of the waves drifting up through the jungle, you can almost see the reset happening.
Here at Tailwind, we’ve always felt it—that subtle gravitational pull toward the ocean. We wake each morning to the sound of waves on the coastline, we watch whales from our deck at sunset, and feel our whole bodies relax just by being close to the water. As we celebrate 20 years of Tailwind Jungle Lodge, we’re also celebrating another milestone: our sailboat is finally back in action! Captain Walter is very excited to be exploring Bahía de Banderas again—eyes peeled for whales, dolphins, sea turtles, and the ripple of wind across the bay.
Water has shaped our rhythm, our family, and the heart of this ecolodge in Mexico from the very beginning.
Why Water Feels Like Magic: Introducing the Idea of “Blue Mind”
There’s a name for this feeling: Blue Mind—a concept introduced by the late ocean advocate and author Wallace J. Nichols. His book explores how science supports what many of us instinctively know: being near, in, on, or under water is incredibly good for the mind. Water calms us. Water inspires us. Water resets us.
Wallace completed the same graduate program at Duke that Captain Walter completed a few years later, so we’ve long felt a personal connection to his work. Although Wallace has passed away, his inspiration lives on here at the lodge. His book has had a permanent home on our shelf, and we keep a copy ready for guests to read in a hammock—arguably the most magical way to experience Blue Mind.
The core of his research is simple and profound:Water makes us happier, healthier, more connected, and more creatively alive.
And at Tailwind, we experience this truth every single day.
🌊 An Ecolodge in Mexico Shaped by the Ocean
From the moment we first arrived in San Pancho nearly two decades ago, we felt the water calling us in. It wasn’t just the beauty of the coastline or the thrill of exploring wild beaches—it was the feeling the ocean gave us. A sense of belonging. A sense of possibility. A sense of being small in the best, most humbling way.
That feeling became the pulse of Tailwind Jungle Lodge.
Today, guests who stay with us at our ecolodge in Mexico often describe the same thing:
“I didn’t realize how much I needed the ocean until I got here.”
“I haven’t slept this deeply in years.”
“I forgot how good it feels to just sit and watch the waves.”
This is the magic of water. This is Blue Mind.
Whether you’re here for an adventure retreat, a family vacation in San Pancho, or a simple moment of re-connection with nature, the ocean becomes part of your story—sometimes quietly, sometimes boldly, always meaningfully.
⛵ Sailing Bahía de Banderas: A Blue Mind Experience
One of our greatest joys this year is having our sailboat back in the water. After a long journey of patience, repairs, and love, she’s once again catching wind on Bahía de Banderas—her sails bright, her spirit revived.
And with her return comes the return of one of our most treasured offerings.
A sailing day with Captain Walter is pure Blue Mind in motion:
The engine cuts, and everything goes quiet.
The boat glides forward on nothing but wind.
Dolphins swim beside the bow.
Whales breach in the distance (and sometime nearby!)
Kids spot turtles.
All generations breathe deeper than they have in months.
Time slows. The mind clears. Something shifts.
If you’re searching for San Pancho places to stay that offer both peaceful jungle immersion and ocean adventure, Tailwind’s combination of treehouse style palapas, coastal trails and oceans experiences, our place could be just what you're looking for.
For Families: Ocean/Jungle Vacations in San Pancho
Families often tell us that this is one of their favorite places to stay in San Pancho with kids—maybe because this place brings out the inner child in all of us!
Here are a few simple ways to find your Blue Mind on this stretch of the Mexican Pacific:
Wild beaches and coastal trails are perfect for exploring and discovering natural wonders
Beginner-friendly surf in Sayulita, Lo de Marcos, and Punta de Mita
Beachside restaurants perfect for feasting on tacos while watching for whales
Sailing adventures with Captain Walter on Bahía de Banderas
Hammocks everywhere here at the lodge, with the waves as your natural soundtrack
If you’re dreaming of a family vacation in San Pancho, Tailwind offers a rare combination of simplicity, nature, and connection. Kids feel it. Parents feel it. Grandparents feel it too. The ocean and jungle here have a way of bringing everyone together and into the moment.
Adventure Retreats by the Ocean
Many groups come to Tailwind for adventure retreats, wellness retreats, or creative gatherings. Over the years we’ve hosted yoga teachers, surf groups, photographers, writers, and organizations seeking fresh perspective in nature.
We often here retreat leaders say “This place is transformational.”
Participants arrive buzzing with the energy of everyday life—then soften, open, and reconnect more deeply than they expected. Whether the retreat includes exploring coastal trails, workshops at the yoga palapa (with ocean view!), sailing, beach time, or simply falling asleep to the waves, water is a silent facilitator of transformation throughout.

Blue Mind isn’t something you chase here — it’s something that rises up to meet you. Maybe it’s the sound of waves drifting through the jungle canopy each morning, or the way the breeze moves easily through the open-air palapas. Maybe it’s the quiet walk down to the beach at sunrise, or the stillness that settles when you pause to watch for whales on the horizon.
Water is part of the landscape, part of the rhythm, part of the experience of simply being here.
